Tremendous Hearts is able to receive tax deductible donations from individuals and organizations interested in supporting a specific volunteer while they are serving in South Africa. Donors who are not related to the volunteer(s) may make donations and specify which volunteer(s) should be supported with the gift. The value of this restricted gift is considered a charitable donation and is tax-deductible as specified by IRS regulations. Donors who are related to the volunteer(s) may make donations for general operating support only. Per IRS regulations, donors may not make tax-deductible contributions that have the sole purpose of benefiting a relative. IRS Publication 526 defines a “relative” as a child, stepchild, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, step brother, step sister, father, mother, grandparent, step father, step mother, niece or nephew (son or daughter of sister or brother), aunt or uncle (brother or sister of father or mother), son in-law, daughter-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law. Relative donors should contact their volunteer(s) for additional information. Tremendous Hearts may receive an unlimited amount in donations for a volunteer but may only pay out an amount equal to the actual expenses associated with a volunteer’s service in South Africa. On the rare occasions that donations exceed volunteer service expenses, Tremendous Hearts will use excess contributions for general operations or other projects. Tremendous Hearts will reduce donations for the support of volunteers made using PayPal by the percentage fee charged for donation processing, which is currently 2.9%. In addition, Tremendous Hearts reserves the right to deduct from restricted gifts any other reasonable costs associated with managing restricted gifts including but not limited to wire transfer and other banking fees. Donors who wish to donate by credit card, may do so using PayPal. In order to ensure that donations are credited properly and to ensure their deductibility, non-relative donors should add the volunteer’s name in the “instructions to the seller” screen before completing the transaction. Relative donors should type in “general operating fund” in the in the “instructions to the seller” screen before completing the transaction. Non-relative donors who wish to give by check should write the volunteer(s) name in the memo line. Relative donors should write “general operating fund” in the memo line. Tremendous Hearts will notify volunteers of any gifts received. All donors should check with their tax professional if they have any questions regarding making a gift to Tremendous Hearts. There are so many occasions to celebrate your friends and loved ones' charitable spirit -- weddings, anniversaries, births and birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah and more.
